How To Get Rid of Bad Habits

For most of us, the word “Habits” sounds too normal to them, they take them too casually as it has become part of their daily routine and that’s true. This is how habit works. But myriad of us don’t know, how important habits play a role in shaping our lives or becoming successful in our lives.

A man first define or built their habits and then habits define or built their lives. So it should be our primary goal to mould our habits in positive directions to live happy and prosperous lives.

What are habits?

The behaviors or activities that we perform or show daily in our lives without using our consciousness or giving thought to that are habits.For instance, brushing our teeth, sitting on particular seat in a sofa, overeating, smoking etc.

How habits are formed?

When we repeatedly do or perform same actions over a certain period of time, then that pattern is stored in basal ganglia of our brain permanently.

In order to save energy and efforts, so that our brain can use that saved energy and effort for other activities and tasks. This is the reason why our brain tries to develop habits to free up some energy.

This process of converting a sequence of actions into daily routine is known as chunking and their are thousands of chunks that are stored in our basal ganglia such as picking up your smartphone before tooth brush, dressing for work etc.

The process of habit formation inside our brain is three steps process. First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells our brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. The second one is routine which can either mental or physical. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain to figure out if that particular pattern in worth remembering and storing in the brain.

In this way, the pattern of cue, routine and reward become more and more automatic as you do it on daily basis. Eventually, your brain will generate a glaring craving for that particular habit. Hence, it would become difficult for you to resist that urge to perform that task.

This habit loop is very important to discovery as it helps a person to identify his daily routine cycle, hence, he/she can focus on the urge that triggers him/her to do the particular task and replace it with good one. In this way, the habit which are performed by your subconscious mind will be replaced by your conscious efforts.

How to get rid of bad habits and replace it with a good one?

It takes at about 2 months to cultivate a habit and once it is formed, it is extremely difficult for a person to get rid of that habit.Moreover, the only thing, we can do is to replace that habit with a good one.

To do so, firstly, we have to recognize our habit loop cycle of cue, routine, reward(the most important point). Secondly, that person has to replace that routine with an alternate. The example below helps you with better understanding.

Once their was a man who used to have bad habits eating donuts everyday. Due to this, he was becoming stout and unhealthy. He was quite worried about his body and feels depressed at times. But one day, he decided to get rid of this bad habit.

Firstly, he observed his habit loop and the trigger which was causing him to eat the donuts daily. He found that at around 3 pm to 3:30 time slot act as a trigger which forces him to eat.

At first few attempts, he failed miserably and continued with his daily routine. But after few days, when he got that trigger, he instead of eating donuts,instead, he choose to eat chocolate, Thus his brain got the similar reward.

Finally, one day he does not bought the donut and goes to his friends and started talking. This process, he continued everyday and finally got rid of that habit.Moreover, his urge or trigger to eat donut got destroyed.

Our subconscious mind does not have the decision making ability, he acts on the thing which your conscious mind put into it. So its our duty to put better habit pattern inside our subconscious brain, so that he can act on it positively.
